3G Telephony in India

3G telephony started in India in December 2008, with BSNL a n d MTNL launching services. These companies have since then reached the experience of this service to subscribers across a number of regions of the country. In order to further develop 3G telephony in the country, the Department of Telecommunications awarded 3G spectrum to private sector operators in September 2010, following a highly successful and transparent auction process which was lauded by all the key stakeholders.

3G Auction

The Department of Telecommunications conducted the 3G Auctions during February to June 2010, and subsequently awarded spectrum to the successful bidders on 1st September 2010 as per the commi t t ed t ime l ine s . The auctions have been praised by all stakeholders as being efficient, fair and transparent and offer ing al l interes ted parties an equal opportunity to win rights to 3G spectrum.
