In Viswana than Anand, India has a world champion in chess, who has been at the pinnacle for long and been among the top-3 of the world for a better part of the last 15 years. In Sachin Tendulkar, India has the world’s most gifted and successful cricketer. Alas, neither game is an Olympic sport.

In Mangte Chungneijang Marykom, India has a four-time world champion in women’s boxing and in Koneru Humpy India has the World No. 2 in women’s chess. Alas, neither are these two sports on the Olympic programme.

Same is the case with Pankaj Ad v a n i , a mu l t i p l e wo r l d champion in amateur billiards and snooker, who has also become the World champion in professional billiards.

But India also has Saina Nehwal, the World No. 2 in women’s badminton and the current World No. 2 in men’s Air Rifle shooting in Gagan Narang. In tennis stalwarts Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, owners of more than 12 and 10 Grand Slam titles respectively, India has doubles exponents worthy of a place in the Hall of Fame.
