What is Public?

The debate on Public Service Broadcasting in India has often been sharp and acrimonious. The landmark judgement of the Supreme Court in 1995 declared airwaves to be the public property. The court directed the government to regulate the airwaves in the interest of the public. Ruling against the monopoly control of the airwaves, the court strongly argued that airwaves were essential to ensure the diversity of views and opinion which is the life blood of democracy. The judgement has had far reaching and significant implications on the government policy on radio and television in India.
